HOW TO: Make Coloring Safe & Enjoyable for Children

Most kiddos are ready to start coloring between 12-15-months, after they have mastered the pincer grasp. The pincer grasp is the ability to hold something (ex.: a block, marker) between the thumb and first finger. As children age, their grasp develops so they can efficiently use more tools and toys! Younger children will probably find it easier to use chunky writing tools, like markers, while older children will feel comfortable using finer tools, like pencils and crayons.

Here's a few tips to support your budding artist and ensure your children get the most out of their artistic experiences.

  • Ensure all supplies are non-toxic! While exploring their new toys and tools, it's very likely that kids will put their coloring utensils in their mouths. Thankfully, most kid-friendly art products are non-toxic, but it's always important to check.
  • Beware of sharp objects! Some pens and pencils have sharp points that present a poking hazard. If this presents a barrier for your child, try chunky crayons/markers and other mediums (ex.: chalk, paint).
  • Tape their paper down! This helps keep the paper steady to avoid frustration while coloring.
  • Find printable options! It can be difficult and expensive to replace favorite toys for kids. Printable products, such as those from Brain Bloom Books, are an easy, cost-effective way to always have your favorite coloring activities available!
  • Get involved! Grab some paper for yourself and join the fun! The more involved you are, the more involved your kiddos will be.
  • Supervise, but don't direct! Same as all kid-friendly activities, it's critical they have adult supervision to stay safe but also the freedom to be curious and creative.

Above all, have fun and enjoy the quality time with your children!
